Transforming Fairy Tales
Lesson 4: Editing our fairy Tales

next page

Lesson 1. Transforming

Once the students' tales were written on a word-processing document, we began the editing task in a number of ways. Students were instructed to edit for spelling, grammar and punctuation. They reread their tales to make sure that they included at least five of the criteria of a fairy tale.
1. Students reviewed their own work using the computer tools such as spell checker, thesaurus, and "show invisibles" in the editing preference section to check spacing.
2. Students edited each others work.
3. Finally, the teacher printed the tales, made comments and corrections and had the students make the final corrections on their computers.

MAGICAL FAIRY TALE MOMENTS @ http://longwood.k12.ny.us/ridge/wq/savona/ provides a webquest format for the exploration and creation of fairy tales. some teachers may find this to be a helpful motivational tool.

Julissa

The Evil Witch Of Haizil Hill

Once upon a time there was a princes . She lived near a hill called Haizil. On top of the hill there was a little cabin. In the cabin there lived a witch called Zelldi-Helldi. The witch never lived a happy moment in her life.
One day, Zelldi-Helldi looked out her window, past the lawn, over to the princes house. The witch said, “I’ll mix up some trouble in that house”. It was a long way past the lawn to the princess's house. But the witch flew on her broom.
When she got there, she looked in the window and she saw the princes eating a pineapple. The witch said, “I’ll make sure that when that princess eats another pineapple she will pin herself with a pineapple pin. But Fortunately, the princess parents heard and made sure to cut Jessica’s pineapple.
One day Jessica’s parents were not home and Jessica was hungry, so she took a pineapple to eat. Then, Jessica fell into a deep sleep. A moment later her parents came through the door. The only thing that could help Jessica was a kiss from a prince.
The prince came and gave Jessica a kiss. Jessica awoke and said, “YUCK THAT WAS THE WORST KISS EVER!”. Jessica also told the prince, “You need to get a breath mint” Jessica’s mother handed the prince a spearmint. Of course the prince liked it.
And so on the prince married the princes. And, they lived happily ever after.
THE END Once the students have completed editing, they divide their writing into pages.

Lesson 3. Writing our fairy tales
How can we transform a tale?

Once the editing is completed, students will divide their tales into pages. Then, they will copy and paste each section onto a drawing document for each page. I used the drawing format for this step because it allows students to move words and images around and to continue to edit their writing. For our final pages however, students would work in painting documents. (Suggestion: Create a standardized system for saving pages. I used the Students name/fairytale/page1 for this section.)

Jullissa moved her first paragraph onto page 1.
