  1. The student will explain how a community changes throughout time.

  2. Understands selected developments in transportation prior to the Renaissance. i.e. Roman Roads

  3. Knows ways government has provided goods and services in the ancient world such as palaces, temples and other public buildings.

       ACTIVITIES
  1. Do a web with the students on buildings that you find in a city. Answers should be  museums, courthouses, theaters, malls, stadiums, schools, houses, etc.

  2. Ask students to predict what kind of buildings you might see in Ancient Rome.

  3. If you have the Harcourt Brace Social Studies the class may read pages 458-459 to have a preview of what the city was like.

  4. Tell students no civilization is so identified with constructing and building things than the Romans. Explain how in ancient civilizations the construction of buildings was very different than now.  They used a lot of arches, carvings and statues in their designs as well as very tall columns.

  5. Tell students they will be working in groups of four.  Each group will pretend to be tourist visiting ancient Rome and like any tourist you take your camera with you.  They will be visiting different websites and create a slide show of their visit to Ancient Rome.

  6. Hand out a student syllabus on the slide show presentation and go over all that is expected. The slide show must include an explanation of each site and its significance or use in the city.  To get the information they need they will visit the following sites.

  7. To begin their tour they will visit Roman town a tour of an ancient roman town. 

  8. Next, What Kind of Architecture? read about the architecture of Rome.

  9. Explore some more at City of Rome and at  Roman Empire.

  10. Also Great Builders get more info on the architects of old.
  11. Finally visit  Monumental Rome to see photos of ruins. To use photos you must ask for permission.

  12. Students will present their slide show to the class. 

  13. After the students have done in depth study they can now write a comparison paragraph on how communities have changed throughout time.  They will compare and contrast the ancient civilization and the modern world.

HOMEWORK
  • Students will write a paragraph to explain how the building of roads affected the growth of the city of Rome.

  • Then illustrate a Roman road.

EXTENSION
  • Tell students that rich Romans used mosaics to decorate their floors. They were small patterned tiles made of tiny pieces of stone. Show example

  • Students will create their own mosaic tile using construction paper.
