       ACTIVITIES
  1. Discuss what is the role of people today.  Ask questions like:

    How many people make up your family?  What jobs do dads and moms have?  

    What do children do?  Do all children get go to school?  

    What kind of houses do we live in?  What kind of food do we eat?

  2. Read the Third Grade Harcourt Brace Social Studies pages 460-461 or other resource.

  3. Discuss family life in Ancient Rome. Ask the following questions;

           a.  What was the family life like? What roles did each family 
                member have?

           b.  What were schools like?  What did children write on?

           c.  How were the houses back then?  

  4. Tell students they will do further investigation on family life in Ancient Rome

  5. Hand students a table on Roman Family Life  The students will complete this table as they visit the following websites.  In These websites, students will get specific information on the roles of people, homes, food, entertainment and more.

  6. After gathering information on family life in Ancient Rome, the students will use the table to compare and contrast Ancient Romans family life with present day family life.

HOMEWORK

  • Tell students that the Roman language comes from Latin.  Our alphabet comes from Latin.  
  • Give students a handout on the Latin alphabet. The student will compare the Latin Alphabet with the alphabet we use today.

EXTENSION

  • Tell students that Romans used only 7 letters to represent all numbers 
  • Give students a handout with the roman numerals and explain how it works. They will practice writing numbers in Roman Numerals

  • Students will visit BBC go Shopping , Print the activity and go shopping using roman numerals.
