As the World Orbits

TEACHERS

Resource Needs: spreadsheet and graphing package (Excel, Number Magic...), flipchart/chalkboard, and digital projector.

Learning Objective: Children will identify the differences among the four seasons, and will be able to justify their choice in favourite seasons by participating in a group discussion and poll, the results of which will be graphically represented.

Prior Knowledge/Skills: basic knowledge of the seasons, ability to participate in a group brainstorm.

Key Definitions:

  • Seasons: How we divide a year according to weather events.
  • Climate: Seasonal weather events that help describe a region.

Activities:

Begin whole-class discussion about the seasons.  As a group, put together a chart describing the characteristics of the four season.

Gauge the children's prior knowledge by asking them to think about what happens when the seasons change and why... lead them toward the understanding that the physical relationship between the sun and the earth is the main factor in changing seasons.

Poll the class and appoint someone to tally who likes which season  best.  Review graphing skills by using the overhead projector to enter this data into a spreadsheet and make a graph to represent it.
