       ACTIVITIES

       INTRODUCTION:

  1. Set the following scenario for the class.  Tell the class that from now on, only girls can go to college and become doctors and lawyers.  Boys must stay home, cook and take care of the house. Have a discussion about this rule.  Is it fair?

  2. Have a class discussion about the government in the United States. Ask questions like.

    a.  What kind of government do we have in the United States? 

    b.  How do our leaders get their position?

    c.  Do the people get to choose what they want to do?

  3. Tell students that since they've seen what ancient Rome looked like, now they will take a look at how the government was and how it changed through time.  

  4. Introduce the different vocabulary needed for students to have some background.

  5. Read Harcourt Brace Social Studies pages 456-457 as background knowledge.

  6. Give students Activity Worksheet to begin the research.

     PART I    The Myth

1.  Students will go to BBC Roman City  to learn about the beginning of Rome.  Student Worksheet

   There is a legend that people believe about how Rome was founded.  

    A.  Click on Legend and read the legend of when Rome began. 

    C.  Write a story map about the legend.

    B.  Discuss writer's point of view.  Do you believe this legend?  Why or why not?

    PART II   The Government 

In this section of the lesson students will visit the sites below and gather information to complete the following tasks.

HOMEWORK

  • Have students do another timeline listing other emperors.
  • The student will use two empty paper towel rolls and large construction paper to make a scroll and glue their timeline on it.

EXTENSION

  • Students will visit and copy the   12 tables  
  • Search the web for the U.S. Amendments and compare the rules from back then and now.
