1.   What does the word "Republic" mean in Latin?

res' publica means "public matters" or matters of the state

2.   What was an emperors job?  
     
 Rule the country

3.   What were the three branches of roman government?
     
 Executive, Legislative and Judicial

4.   Why did they create these branches?

 The people wanted to make sure that rulers did not become tyrants.

5.    Who was aloud to vote?  

 Only rich men were aloud to vote.  Poor men, women and slaves were not aloud 
  to vote.

6.  What were the different classes of people and who were they? 

Rome knew four classes of people. This division was very important to the Romans.
The lowest class were the slaves. They were owned by other people. They had no rights at all.
The next class were the plebeians. They were free people. But they had little say at all.
The second highest class were the equestrians (sometimes they are called the 'knights'). Their name means the 'riders', as they were given a horse to ride if they were called to fight for Rome. To be an equestrian you had to be rich.
The highest class were the nobles of Rome. They were called 'patricians'. All the real power in Rome lay with them.

7.  What caused the Roman Empire to come to an end?

So many people started to migrate to different places that they could not control so many people.

The leaders were called consuls. They were like a king but they were voted by the people and overlooked by the Senate so that they did not become tyrants. Their job was to rule the country for one year. They also supervised the Senate and the Army when at war.

The most powerful were the Senate.  They would advice the consuls on the decisions they made such as the money they could spend.

Like in the U.S. the judicial judges decided punishment for criminals.

                                 Romulus and Remus Story Map

Characters:  Twin brothers, Romulus and Remus. Silvia, their mother, Faustulus the herdsman, wolf, woodpecker

Setting:  In the wilderness by the Tyber River then , the kingdom of Rome by the Tyber River

Romulus and Remus are twin brothers  who become orphans when their mother Silvia is imprisoned.  The twins are cast into the river and are found by a wolf and a woodpecker.  They animals nurse them until Faustulus, a herdsman, finds them and raises them.  A problem occurs when they go to find their kingdom on the shores of  Tyber River.  The brothers could not agree about anything. During this fight Romulus kills his twin and builds a new settlement. Having no people to live the the community he reaches out to outcast to settle in his community which become known as the Romans.. 

Another problem rises when Romulus realizes there were no women. He invites the Latins and Sabines to a celebration and the Romans capture the women for their community. A war begins between the tribes.

The Sabine women try to solve the problem by praying and they begged the two tribes to unite. Romulus and Titus the leader of the Sabines unite but for a short period.  Titus is killed during a confrontation and Romulus reigns for 37 years as the first king of Rome until his father, Mars, carried him away to heaven in a chariot of fire.
