Learning Objectives: By the end of
this lesson, we should be able to understand the difference
between the northern and southern hemispheres, and should be
able to predict the climate in the earth's north and the south.
Key Definitions:
Equator: the invisible line that
divides the earth into north and south.
Northern Hemisphere: the part
of the earth above the equator.
Southern Hemisphere: the part
of the earth below the equator.
If you have a globe in your classroom, then this lesson
will be much easier.
We have already talked about the axis and the orbit of the
earth, right? We know that the earth orbits around the sun one time per
year, and that it does so on its axis. We also know that this tilt on
the axis means that sometimes we are closer to the sun, and sometimes we are
farther away. This distance from the sun gives us our cold weather in
the winter, and our warm weather in the summer.
In this lesson, we are going to talk about the northern
hemisphere and southern hemisphere.
All we need to know is that the divider between the north
and south is called the EQUATOR, and that the United Kingdom is north of the
equator, so it is in the NORTHERN HEMISPHERE.
When we are having our summer, people in the south are having
their winter because we are tilted closer to the sun then they are.
