What Are Symbols?

Symbols represent concepts or
ideas. Some symbols and their meanings have been
handed down through many generations.
Candles
symbolize the light from heaven.
Doves
have symbolized eternal life, innocence and
peace.
Eagles have
represented height, spiritual, courage, victory,
and power. The bald eagle is a symbol of the
United States.
Acorns, as the
seeds of the oak, are a symbol of potential. In
Norse and Celtic culture, acorns symbolized life
and immortality.
Bunches of grapes
in Egyptian art symbolized the heart, because of
the similarity of shape, color and blood-like
juice of the grape. Since the heart is vital to
life, it therefore symbolizes life itself.
To the Chinese, the butterfly
symbolizes immortality.
Bridges have
symbolized linking; between the earthly and
heavenly realms, between the physical and the
spiritual, or between life and death. In modern
psychoanalytic terms, bridges symbolize the
transition from one state of being to another and
the opportunity for change.
Dogs represent
loyalty, vigilance and courage.
Olive branches
represent peace.
Fruit represents
life.
Hammers represent
power.
Handshakes carry
a variety of meanings including, greeting,
goodbye, friendship, solidarity, unity and
agreement.
Hands represent
different things depending on their position. The
raised hand symbolizes voice and song. Two hands
joined typically signify union.
Harps signify
harmony and a bridge between heaven and earth.
An Iris/Lilly
stand for light and hope.
Ivy represents
immortality, friendship, and faithfulness.
Lambs signify
purity, innocence, and gentleness.
Triangles represent
faith a hope.
Willows represent
sorrow.
Laurel Leaves/Wreaths represent
victory.
Lions represent
valor, strength, courage, pride, wisdom,
protection, and majesty.
Thistles stand
for remembrance.
Roses stand for
completion, achievement, and perfection.
Stars represent
wisdom and life.
Swallows signify
hope, and renewal of Life,
Scales stand for
justice.
Upright Torches represent
life, truth, and intelligence.
