A
unit by Carolyn Hornik,
P.S. 101,
Brooklyn, New York
September 2002
Overview
This
unit serves to memorialize the victims and heroes
of
the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade
Center. The
unit
will focus on rebuilding of the site, developing hope for the
future,
and "creating
beauty and inspiration out of the ashes."
Although
this is a unit designed for fifth graders in the
New
York
City Public School system, the activities may be
adapted
for
older students and to memorialize victims and
heroes in other cities.
Students
develop and appreciate the concept of what a memorial
is,
evaluate proposed designs for structures to be
built at the
World
Trade Center site, use drawing and painting tools
to design
their
own structures to be built at the World Trade
Center site,
learn
writing skills and word processing skills as they
describe their
designs
in words, develop the concept of area as they
determine
the number and size of the structures that can
be
accommodated at the World Trade Center site, and above all,
value the sacrifices of the
many
individuals who lost their lives or dedicated their services on
September 11,
2001
and during the months that followed, at the World Trade Center
site.
