Standards Addressed

 

1. Read, write, listen, and speak for literary response and expression as they read, interpret, and write original memorial poems, letters, and compositions.

2. Read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation as they read, evaluate and discuss criteria and design descriptions for structures to be built at the New World Trade Center site.

3. Participate in group meetings to research information regarding World Trade Center plans.

4. Interpret and synthesize information to produce a narrative account in the form of reports that describe students designs for structures to be placed at the World Trade Center site.

5. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the rules of the English language in written and oral work as students write memorial poems, letters, and compositions and as they write and orally describe their original designs.

6. Analyze and subsequently revise work including memorial writings and design descriptions to improve its clarity and effectiveness.

7. Develop eye-hand coordination and visualization skills by designing, constructing and measuring structures.

8. Develop concept of area of plane figures and surface area of solid figures as part of the construction phase of the students' designs.

9. Develop pride and a sense of accomplishment in being able to design buildings for the new World Trade Center site that "create beauty and inspiration out of the ashes" and inspire hope for the future.
