PROCEDURE AND ACTIVITIES   

1. Discuss all the parts of the peanut (shell, pod, peas, skin)

2. Reread the book The Life and Times of the Peanut by Charles Micucci as a review.

3. Revisit the A-Z peanut lists that students did at the beginning of the unit.

4. Add all the new words related to peanuts that the class has learned throughout the unit.

5. Tell students that they will work in groups to create an ABC class book on products made from peanuts. They will state the name of the product, why it is useful and who makes the products. The class book will be done using powerpoint.

6.  Assign each group a set of letters to work on. (for example: Group A will do letters A-F, Group B will work on letters G-L, etc.

7. Students will visit Carver Inventions and print a list of different products Carver invented using peanuts. 

8. Give students a research sheet.  They will use different search engines to see what they can find.  If they are having trouble finding information the student sheet has several websites they can visit.

9. Each group will create a Powerpoint presentation to show their findings on peanut products.

10. Students will print their powerpoint presentation and the teacher will create a hard copy  of  Peanut Products A-Z.

 

Assessment

1. Student completed A-Z book on Peanut Products.

2. Group Powerpoint Presentation

 

Homework

Student will research their home and make a list of products they found have peanuts as an ingredient.

 

Extension

1. Students will visit http://sherik.tripod.com/activities/peanuts.htm  and create their own peanut product.

 Peanut Shell Collages:  Use this activity at the end of your peanut unit to recycle the peanut shells saved from other activities.
