Using the Internet, students
will conduct research on African Art and respond
to an artwork artistically and in writing. Students will identify a piece
of artwork
that they found interesting and examine features and collect facts in order to
create a
PowerPoint presentation. Students will "bookmark" the web page and other
appropriate
web sites focusing on African artwork allowing them to refer back to the artwork
so they
can use the information to draw conclusions as to: a) physical description
of the piece
(Which materials were used to create it? What are its features?) and b)
explanation about its
use (Was it functional such as furniture or a bowl? Was it used in ceremonies?)
Students will also learn
how to cite a bibliography entry for electronic information.
They will then use
their research, their cinquain poem, and original artwork to create an
informational
PowerPoint presentation. The presentation is evaluated using this rubric.
This project, designed for elementary to
middle school level students, addresses multiple standards in
Technology, Social
Studies, Language Arts, and Visual Arts.
Once the students
complete this hands-on, long-term project they can creatively plan other
projects
expanding on the use of technology.
Those teachers who live in the NYC area may ( Here are some samples pieces my students
found online and then recreated)
wish to take students
on a field trip to the Museum for African Art in Long Island
City, Queens.
