Teacher Introduction
This lesson was developed as part
of an online class through the University
of Northern Iowa in conjunction with the fourth grade teachers and
the computer teachers of Colegio Franklin
D. Roosevelt in Lima, Peru.
Deserts have unique geological
features and are an important part of the world as they exist on all continents.
As humans, we have a significant impact on our environment. On the
other hand, the environment causes all living things to adapt. In
this project the students will be working in groups to explore desert animals,
plants, and peoples. They will become an expert in a specific area
on desert research. They will be exploring and researching many different
resources including the Internet to become very knowledgeable in their
area of expertise. They will be exploring how their specific area
adapts to the difficult conditions that exist in the desert. With
their expertise they will be able to become of a part of a larger research
group. In this group, they will research and learn how their area
of expertise reacts and interacts with the other areas in the desert environment.
As a group they will be constructing a Virtual Desert Museum to help others
understand the aspects of adaptations in the desert environment.
