"Oaks are flowering plants belonging to the genus Quercus. The Latin name has always stood for oak and was derived from two Celtic words, quer, meaning fine and cuez, meaning tree. These fine trees and shrubs are set apart from all others by a unique combination of four characteristics: a fruit known as the acorn; distinctive, wind-pollinated flowers; a strong, complex wood; and an ability to live for many decades, if not centuries."
