OAK COMMUNITY SURVEY  

OBJECTIVE:  Students learn how to communicate their survey results in a PowerPoint presentation.  

BACKGROUND:  In preparation for guiding students to the final PowerPoint project, students should go through various exercises to sharpen their skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Paint.  The teacher should also be skilled in these computer programs

PREPARATION:  Students have completed a map in Paint, written out an introduction and conclusion and prepared a table with a graph.

ANTICIPATORY SET:  Discuss font size and style, background colors, images and animation as distractions in PowerPoint.  I have a computer presentation showing all of these issues and how they can detract from the project.  Also discuss too much text.  

ACTIVITY:  Revisit search engines and Internet etiquette.  Students complete a Word document with their oak information notes and analysis of each site.  Using this information, they complete a PowerPoint project using their information and data.

PROCEDURE: 

  1. Students create title slide including a digital picture of an oak.
  2. Students then types introductions slide checking spelling and grammar.
  3. Students paste map from Paint over to another slide.
  4. Students paste table to another slide.
  5. Student paste graph to another slide.
  6. Students type conclusion slide checking spelling and grammar.
  7. Finally students add backgrounds, titles, transitions, etc.  

CLOSURE:  Present PowerPoint to the class for feedback.  Make final changes to PowerPoint.  

EXTENSION:  Students save PowerPoint onto a floppy.  Graded using oak project rubric.

HOMEWORK:  Parents evaluate PowerPoint presentation at the end of the year.  I give this assignment as part of a science portfolio evaluation.
