Your Own Alphabet
Procedure:
-
Print samples of
hieroglyphics.

Give each
student a copy of a hieroglyph or using an overhead projector show the
entire class the several samples.

Tell the
students that the Ancient Egyptians develop a system of writing that
consist of several hundred picture signs called hieroglyphics. Explain
the difference between a phonogram and a ideogram.

Have the
students describe what each symbol looks like and brainstorm what they
think the meaning of the picture is? Have them list their ideas.

Discuss with the
students their information.

Explain to the
students the true meaning of the symbols.

Have students
visit the following website: (Think
Quest Hieroglyphics) to view and research other examples of hieroglyphics.

Tell students to
imagine how they would design their own hieroglyph.

Ask students to
design their own ideogram that represent his or her name and write
their ideogram in a cartouche.
-
Using
"Paint Brush", "Kid Pix", or other drawing
program, have students design their own hieroglyph and cartouche.
-
When the
students are finished, ask each student to explain his or her
hieroglyph to the class.
Assessment:
Using a 10 point scale, students will be awarded
(5)
POINTS for their ideogram, (3) POINTS for their presentation, and
(2)
POINTS for group participation.
Extension
Activity:
Have students design
their own Ancient Egyptian post card. On the front they should draw an
important landmark or symbol of Ancient Egypt. On the back they should
write a message in hieroglyphics and its translation in English below
it. Have the students exchange their cards to share.
