  2. Give each student a copy of a hieroglyph or using an overhead projector show the entire class the several samples.

  3. Tell the students that the Ancient Egyptians develop a system of writing that consist of several hundred picture signs called hieroglyphics. Explain the difference between a phonogram and a ideogram.

  4. Have the students describe what each symbol looks like and brainstorm what they think the meaning of the picture is? Have them list their ideas.

  5. Discuss with the students their information.

  6. Explain to the students the true meaning of the symbols.

  7. Have students visit the following website:   (Think Quest Hieroglyphics) to view and research other examples of hieroglyphics.

  8. Tell students to imagine how they would design their own hieroglyph.

  9. Ask students to design their own ideogram that represent his or her name and write their ideogram in a cartouche.

Using a 10 point scale, students will be awarded (5) POINTS for their ideogram, (3) POINTS for their presentation, and (2) POINTS for group participation.

Extension Activity:

Have students design their own Ancient Egyptian post card. On the front they should draw an important landmark or symbol of Ancient Egypt. On the back they should write a message in hieroglyphics and its translation in English below it.  Have the students exchange their cards to share.
