This unit provides many opportunities for the teacher to assess student learning.  There is a formal assessment rubric (multimedia.pdf) for the final project, but along the way the teacher is observing students at each phase.  They also have homework assignments (e.g. interviewing a family member) that must be completed satisfactorily before continuing on to the next step.
