Answer this question in an essay: How do the human rights violations and the totalitarian government that you read about in 1984 compare to human rights violations in one other country past or present?

To start: Read 1984 and take notes on the human rights violations that you notice and how the totalitarian government functions. In fact, make sure you have written quotations from the book to prove your points.

Next:

A. Choose a country (present or in the past) to compare to 1984, and do research to find human rights violations. ( I will give you some time on the Internet during class.)

A partial list of possible countries and time periods: Hitler's Germany 1933-1945, Stalin's USSR, Argentina during the military dictatorship, Cuba, Afghanistan's Taliban, China, African countries that are under dictatorships now or previously, Latin American countries that were under military dictatorships, Bosnia, Serbia, Dominican Repbulic's Trujillo

B. How to find information on the Internet

1. Use http://google.com

Under search type in the name of the country or the country's dictator + human rights abuses or totalitarian government, for example: Hitler + human rights abuses.

2. Use your public library card number to find articles in magazines and newspapers. Type in the URL: brooklynpubliclibrary.org or queenslibrary.org. Find online databases such as Proquest and then you need to type in a library card number.

3. Go to The Research Page for more help on how to do Internet research.

C. When you find articles take notes on how the human rights abuses and totalitarian governments is similar to 1984. You can also copy and paste the URL's onto a microsoft word page and print it to take home to use at home. NO PRINTING OF ARTICLES IS ALLOWED on school printer.

D. Write down your sources in a bibliography.

E. Make an outline before you write your report.

F. Write down quotations from the book to prove your points.

Finally: Write a report comparing the human rights violations and totalitarian

government of the country you chose to 1984. Make sure you include quotations from the book.
