The Council
for Basic Education's mission is to strengthen teaching
and learning of the basic subjects -- English, history,
government, geography, mathematics, the sciences, foreign
languages, and the arts -- in order to develop the capacity
for lifelong learning and to foster responsible citizenship. As
an independent voice for education reform, CBE believes
that all children can learn and supports this goal both
by publishing a monthly bulletin and conducting professional
development programs which strengthen academic content
in curriculum and in teaching. The Time
Warner Art program for New York art teachers, with
its emphasis on artistic skills and knowledge, is consistent
with CBE's mission to promote excellent teaching.
Working with The
Teachers Network-IMPACT II, the
Time Warner Fellows will become a part of a World Wide Web database which
will allow them to present their curricular projects to thousands of teachers
across the nation. The more art teachers become aware of these exemplary
projects, the more they will be encouraged to bring their own creative
efforts into their schools.
Through a summer fellowship program, supported by Time Warner Inc., CBE
has
been able to award 45 teachers from New York to conduct summer study to
strengthen their knowledge of and expertise in the arts. We were
able to select 13 of those Fellows to take part in this program which will
present curricular projects through the Internet.
