This case explores issues of school discipline in a small urban school. In a school explicitly dedicated to creating a safe, caring, and nurturing environment, how can the administration address discipline in a way that is not punitive?
Discussion Questions
- What is the best way to educate a staff about the Discipline Code (the “Citywide Standards of Discipline and Intervention Measures”) that Kara knew little about? Glenn says he means to take care of it in professional development but is there another, perhaps more effective path? How might the administration include teachers talking to students about the Discipline Code with their classes in a “student-friendly” way?
- What is the optimal level at which to set behavioral policy standards for schools: the school level? The city level? The state level? Why?
- To what extent should a school be responsible for students who need more support than the school is able to give?
