Lesson Four-
The Santa Maria Valley Web Site
Instructional Objectives:
The students will use the Internet for research while
learning to master academic standards in other subjects.
The students will create a web site collaboratively while
learning to master academic standards in other subjects.
Time Required:
Five 30 minute sessions for the following topics: Scanning
and/or photographing artwork, photo editing + saving in folders, Typing
+ saving in folders, web site design-importing pics and/or files + copying
and pasting, web site links-linking. After the sessions the students need
individual time for doing the work.
Advance Preparation and Prerequisite Knowledge/skills:
To make this task easier the students should have basic
knowledge of computer skills.
Materials/Resources Needed:
Computer with Internet access, Digital Camera, Microsoft
Word (or any other word processing software) and a web authoring program.
Vocabulary:
Computer usage and photo editing vocabulary: file, save,
insert, edit, minimize, maximize, resize, crop, image, link, target, table,
etc..
Procedures:
Session one: Show the entire class how to scan and or
photograph the artwork the have done or collected for the web site. Then
have a couple of selected students do it in front of the class (these students
will become your first experts, who will hepl others when it is their turn,
thus freeing up the teacher to work with other students). Assign times
for working on the project.
Session two: Follow the same procedure as in session one, but with photo editing and saving files in folders designated for the web site.
Session three: Follow the same procedure as in sessions one and two, but with typing and saving files in folders designated for the web site.
Session four: Follow the same procedure as in the previous ones, but with web site design focusing on importing text from other files, copying and pasting, and importing pictures or graphics from appropriate files designated for the web site.
Session five: Follow the same procedure as in the previous ones, but with web design focusing on creating the links needed for the web site.
Finale: Preview the web site.

Extensions:
Ongoing Classroom Mural Project- This mural stays up
in the classroom the entire school year and is built upon throughout the
year as we move along in the history of The Santa Maria Valley. The mural
covers the length of the classroom.
Continue the mural:
Continue adding parks, people and anything else that
is sparked by creativity. You will be amazed at the things the students
will come up with.
Continue adding to the web site: local businesses, organizations, etc.
Homework:
Bring photographs, drawings or illustrations for the
web page.
Student Participation
Points assigned based on teacher's criteria for each
item.
