Rock Properties- Student Samples

Directions:  Each group of students was given three different rock samples.  They were asked to identify as many properties as they could.

Student Sample #1

This sample had texture, color, and crystal content.  That's about three of a possible six ways the student could have described the rock.  I would consider this meeting the standard.

Student Sample #2

This student sample has between five and six properties of the rocks- hardness (scratch mark), color, texture, crystal size, luster, and cleavage.  I would consider this standard setting for a third grader. (Above standard).

Student Sample #3

This student sample has between four and five properties.  The only obvious property missing is the size of the crystals.  I would consider this standard setting, though not necessarily superior.

The following are pictures of the students taken during the rock properties lesson.
