Aim:
Back To Fairmount Avenue
-
Instructional
Objectives:
Students will have the opportunity to use the Internet as a research
tool. They will then compile their findings in graphic organizers
such as t-charts and diagrams. Using images they have chosen
from the Internet, students will create a slide show in a program such
as Kid Pix.
-
Time
Required:
Since this is a 57 page chapter book, the rate at which your class
finishes reading it will depend on their reading level, interest,
and how much class time you would like to spend reading the book. I used
this as a read aloud last year, reading 1 or 2 chapters a week.
You can also assign a chapter a night, since there are not many pages
per chapter.
- Advance
Preparation:
For a brief synopsis of the book go to
Powell's Books - 26 Fairmount Avenue by
Tomie De Paola(Powell's
Books is the largest independent used and new bookstore in the world.
Their web site contains detailed descriptions and illustration of the
books available.) It would be helpful if your technology
coordinator could show your children how to create a slide show prior to
this unit. You want them to focus on creating the project, not
learning a new skill.
- Materials:
One copy of State-Us Symbols and
Traveling Back In Time With
Tomie for
each child. Answer key available here at
StateUs Answers.
- Vocabulary:
symbol, memoir, landmark, advertisement
Activity
#1:
Give each student a copy of State-Us
Symbols. Working
in pairs, student will then go to
State Symbols
(This Connecticut
State site lets children learn all
about
Connecticut including: state description, historical firsts, holidays,
early history, government, economy, the land, tourism, state sites &
symbols, historical information & documents) and
New York State Symbols
and
NYS Kids' Room to gather the information needed to fill out their
charts.
Activity #2: As students are
reading 26 Fairmount Avenue, they
will be transported to the year 1938. Give each child a copy of
Traveling Back In Time With
Tomie. At Information
Please: On-Line Dictionary, Internet Encyclopedia, Atlas, & Almanac
Reference students use the interactive almanac by first entering the
year 1938 to gather facts from when Tomie was 4 years old. Then
they find out what was going on in the world when they were 4 years old.
(This site is great for history reports and projects)
Activity # 3: Students
will go to Tomie DePaola's home town and
Take a
Historical Tour of the Silver City of Meriden
(Students can
find information and resources about the city of Meriden. Explore the
site and discover Meriden's rich and diverse heritage. Using a
web, students will work in teams of 4 to list 10-20 places they would
include on a tour of Brooklyn. Images and pictures are then
located on the Internet and used in a group slide show.
- Activity #2
Extension:
Using the information from their tables and details from the story,
children will complete a diagram comparing themselves to
Tomie DePaola. Sample diagram by
Houghton
Mifflin.
-
Activity #3
Extension:
Children will create an advertisement for tourists to visit either
Brooklyn, New York or Meriden, Connecticut.
- Homework:
For the next week, students will work on writing their own family
narrative. Give students sample questions to guide them in their
writing. Family Narrative Questions
- Evaluation:
To assess the recall of facts from
Activity #1 check your students' answers with the answer key and mark it
as a quiz. Since you have given your students parameters for
Activity #2 you will be seeing similar information on each paper.
Look to see that your students are writing in the information in the
correct columns. Prior to working on Activity #3, give students
Slide Show Rubric so they will know
all of the expectations for the project up front.
