Lesson Eight

Past and Present Tense

Objective: Students will read text and determine the main idea and identify relevant supporting details and facts .

Vocabulary: squall, pungent, eerie, sly

Working with words: The teacher will introduce past and present verbs by writing samples on the board, then monitor as students make a list of past and present verbs they find in chapter 8.

Activity: The teacher will...

1. begin lesson by having the students share their predictions of chapter 8

2. introduce new vocabulary words and definitions for chapter 8

3. give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into 6 pieces- again, students can insert a table with rows and columns into word processing, type text, then add clip art and/or drawings or

4. have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box

5. read and discuss chapter 8

6. students will draw the "interior" and "exterior' of the barn- label parts of the barn (roof, door, sides, stalls...)

7. students will describe the job that Sarah and Papa worked together on

Students will go online and complete activities for chapter 8.

Evaluation: Students will do a Cloze activity sheet. Students will fill in the blanks passages taken from chapter 8 and answer the following questions:

*What does Caleb mean when he say’s "Sarah has brought the sea?"

*After the storm  how is the prairie like the sea?

*Why is Caleb afraid to let Sarah drive to town alone?

*Why do you think Sarah liked Jack best?

*What is a squall?

*Describe hail. You may use the dictionary.
