Contractions


Objective: Students will use simple strategies to determine meaning and increase vocabulary for reading including the use of multiple meaning.

Vocabulary: ride, brought, belonging, drive, hail

Working with words: The teacher will introduce contractions by writing samples on the board, then monitor as students make a list of contraction they find in chapter 9.

Activity: The teacher will...

1.  begin lesson by having the students share their predictions of chapter 9

2.  introduce new vocabulary words and definitions for chapter 10

3.  give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into 6 pieces- again students can use word processing to insert a table with 3 columns and three rows, then type text and add clipart or drawings or

4.  have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box

5.  read and discuss chapter 9

6.  students will list the jobs the children did the day Sarah went to town

7.  students will name things that Sarah brought from town

8.  students will use three words to describe Caleb's reaction when he realized that Sarah had returned from town

1.  Students will go online and complete activities for chapter 9.

2.  Students will printout a word search and complete it.

Evaluation: Students will complete the following writing activity. Students will write a newspaper article describing Jacob and Sarah’s wedding and answer the following questions (make sure to include who, what, why, where and when):

*Why do you think Papa let Sarah learn to ride Jack and drive alone into town?

*Why do you think Sarah feels she must ride the most difficult horse, go into town and assist in putting a new roof?

*Name the ways Caleb came up with to keep Sarah from going away.

*Why are Caleb and Sarah scared?

*What safety directions did Papa give Sarah?
