Lesson Seven

Capitalization

Objective: Students will read text and determine the main idea and identify relevant supporting details and facts .

Vocabulary: fond, quilt, porch, dawn, prim

Working with words: The teacher will introduce capitalization by writing samples on the board, then monitor as students make a list of capitalization's they find in chapter 7.

Activity: The teacher will...

1. begin lesson by having the students share their predictions of chapter 7

2. introduce new vocabulary words and definitions for chapter 7

3. give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into 6 pieces- students can also use word processing to insert a table with 3 columns and 3 rows, then type text and add clipart or drawings or

4. have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box

5.  read and discuss chapter 7

6.  students will look up the word "plow" in the dictionary - copy a short definition and try to illustrate it

7.  students will draw a picture of what Anna made in the kitchen while Sarah and Maggie talked outside

1.  Students will go online and complete activities for chapter 7.

2.  Students will play an interactive game on vocabulary.

Evaluation: Students will answer the following questions:

*Why do Matthew and his family visit?

*Why would Maggie be a good friend to Sarah ?

*Why doesn’t Anna want to talk about how she misses the hills of Tennessee ?

*Look at the bottom of page 38. What do you think "whickering" means? What context clues did you use?
