The Wonderful World of Arthur

Arthur’s Thanksgiving

Grade Level:

First and second grade

Time Required:

30 minutes

Objective:

The students will use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activities.

Materials required:

The book Arthur’s Thanksgiving by Marc Brown, a computer with Internet capacity and a printer, construction paper, glue, scissors, crayons and pencils

Vocabulary

Turkey     play     family     food     cast     Pilgrims     Indians

Procedures:

The activities below are in the teaching style of Bloom's Taxonomy. This was done to encourage the students to use higher level thinking skills.

Activities:

Knowledge - The students will orally read the story Arthur’s Thanksgiving. Have them to then create a story board showing the sequence of events in this story.

 

Comprehension - Provide students with all kinds of library resources (children's books, magazine articles, etc.) related to the Pilgrims and the First Thanksgiving. Let them hunt through the books in search of information and illustrations that present the Pilgrims, the Mayflower, or the First Thanksgiving inaccurately or incompletely.

Application - The students will make a turkey facts booklet using an Electronic Encyclopedia.

Analysis - The students will construct 3-D model of their neighborhood in a shoe box diorama.

Synthesis - Have the students to bring in special family items or artifacts to class. Have them to take turns discussing their items. Take pictures of the student presentations and create a slide show.

Extension:

Have the students to take on line field trip to a turkey farm.

Home Learning:

Have the students to decorate, "Mr. Turkey" with their families. After the students a have discussed their projects, place them into the media center.

Evaluation:

The teacher will make a teacher made comprehension test using the Teacher’s Helper Software.
