Lesson #3: The Color Palette

Vibrant Visions: Van Gogh’s Bedroom at Arles

Instructional Objectives:

1. Students will have a virtual visit through the web of “van Gogh’s Bedroom”, an interactive site http://vangoghmuseum.nl  (in computer lab, or at home) to make observations of color and space relationships found in the painting.

2. Students may visit the Community Children’s Museum, in Dover Pa., online or with their family. http://www.communitychildrensmuseum.org to actually experience 3D room installation.

3. Working in groups, students will sketch ideas from original paintings for their 3D Sculptures.

Time Required: Day 5 from timeline. One 40-minute period

Advanced Preparation: Teacher previews interactive virtual website http://vangoghmuseum.nl to view van Gogh’s Bedroom at Arles.

Materials: sketchpads, pencils, erasers, color pencils.

Vocabulary: 1. sketch                                          5. two dimensional

                     2. composition                                 6. three dimensional

                     3. scale

                     4. perspective

Procedure:  While viewing classroom posters and photos from books, magazines, and the Internet, students will create a carefully thought out plan of transforming the two dimensional image into a three dimensional sculpture.

Thought provoking questions might be:

1.        How can I transform this 2d space into a 3d space?

2.         What must be omitted or changed to create the illusion of space from all around?

3.         How large should major elements of the design be?

Homework: Bring in found objects, collage materials, scrap materials, fabrics, cardboard or any other items you feel could be used in your sculptural assemblage. Be sure to have extra heavy duty tapes and glues besides classroom materials to secure your projects.
