Using the workshop model and an interdisciplinary approach to teaching, students were asked to create a larger than life recreation of a famous painting they have become familiar with through their reading and Web explorations.
Beginning with a read-aloud from the "Getting to Know the Great Artist" series by Mike Venezia on the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, students were introduced to art in a fun and exciting way. Van Gogh's life was presented with a light and humorous approach. "If kids can look at art in a fun way, and think of artists as real people, the exciting world of art will be open to them for the rest of their lives."
Using problem-solving skills, communication, and diversity of tasks, student groups of four were able to create 3D sculptural interpretations of their chosen paintings. Some of these include:
"Bedroom at Arles" by Vincent van Gogh
"Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali
"Japanese Bridge & Water Lilies" by Claude Monet
"Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat
"The Great Wave" by Hokusai
