Preliminary Assignments

  • 1. Signs excluding Jews, such as the sign shown here, were posted in public places (including parks, theaters, movie houses, and restaurants) throughout Nazi Germany.  The translation from the German is above this sign.  Write what you would feel if you saw this sign and it applied to you.   How would you react?

  • 2. Watch one of the following videos- "Schiendler's List," "Memories of the Camps."   This last video has  horrific images of the Nazi abuses of inmates at concentration camps. Write in the discusion forum what you were thinking while seeing the video you watched.

  • 3. Read newspaper articles about holocaust survivors.   Write what you are thinking in a dialectical notebook.  For the dialectical notebook form click here.

  • 4. Copy and fill in graphic organizer on the word indifference.

  • 5. Read Friedrich and describe the indifference apparent in the story. Post your writing on the discusion forum, nicenet.org.

  • 6. Read the following New York Times news article, "Elie Wiesel Asks a Haunted Hometown to Face Up," http://nytimes.com/2002/07/31/international/europe/31ROMA.html. In groups or individually answer the question- Who does Elie Wiesel hold responsible for the deaths of the Jews in the town of Sighet, where he grew up?
