Ready-Set-Tech: Brachiosaurus/Apotosaurus What’s The Difference?

Subject Science and Writing
Background Young children have been exposed to several movies about dinosaurs. The movies make no distinction between dinosaurs of the same genus. In this lesson the students will use the Internet to make comparisons between two sauropods. The students will identify key similarities and differences. 
Objectives

Use online resources to revise, retrieve and verify data

Compare and contrast two sauropods

Materials Computers with Internet access, pictures of a Brachiosaurus and an Apotosaurus, Sauropods Work Sheet, Venn diagram worksheet. 
Procedure
  1. The students will observe pictures of a Brachiosaurus and an Apotosaurus.
  2. Discuss how features are similar.
  3. Discuss how features are different.
  4. List data in a Venn diagram
  5. Ask students to develop data to back up visual observations by visiting book marked websites. Some sites to check are:
     
    Zoom Dinosaurs,  click on dinosaur fact sheets, click on the name of the dinosaur
    ABC Teach, click on dinosaur facts
     
  6. After accessing the sites the students will complete the Sauropods Work Sheet.
  7. Write three facts on how the two sauropods are the same.
  8. Write three facts on how the two sauropods are different.
Evaluation Students will compare and contrast sauropods using data recorded on the Sauropods Work Sheet.
