About the Grant:


How This Grant was Adapted:

Students will conduct guided internet research on the recycled product that they used to create their designs. They will use MS office to type a one page essay which discusses information on how their recycled material is generally reused and how they used it in designing their garments. Students will use a digital camera to document the process of this project. They will capture pictures of their fashion illustrations, finished garments, and of themselves as they work on their garments. (Students will work in teams of two to capture this process in digital form)

  1. Students will be educated in implementing various methods to preserve the global environment.
  2. Students will learn how to use recycled materials to create visual artworks.

Lesson 1:

How do we design a garment out of recycled materials?

Project Objectives:

  1. Students will use the web for research
  2. Students will gain awareness on global environmental concerns
  3. Students will develop original fashion illustrations
  4. Students will be able to design a garment out of recycled materials

Materials:

  1. PC with Internet access
  2. Drawing paper, pencil, color pencils, markers
  3. Printer
  4. Croquis (Fashion Figures)

Procedures:

  1. Teacher and students will conduct a discussion on the importance of global environmental awareness
    • Motivational questions that the teacher may use include:
    • What are the cause an effects of not recycling specific recyclable materials?
    • What are the ways that you recycle at home and at school?
  2. Students will be divided into groups of 4. Each group will be assigned a group leader. The groups will create a list of 6 to 12 recyclable products and they will explain how they can incorporate that product onto their original fashion design ideas.
  3. Each group will orally present the various ways that they would like to use the recycled materials in their designs.
  4. Students will conduct web research on how the different materials are recycled
  5. Students will print out web based information on 2 global awareness sources and for HW they will organize a two page research paper
  6. Students will design and illustrate 6 to 12 thumbnail sketches
  7. Teacher and student will choose one design and develop a final sketch which will be used as a guide to develop the construction of the garment. The sketch will be posted on the fashion recycle website.

Homework:

Students will develop a 2 page research paper on the specific materials they will use to develop their original fashion design idea. Research paper will be type written. Students will be required to site their sources and the information will be posted on the fashion recycle website.

Assessment:

The finished garment as well as the research paper will reflect what the students have learned.

Lesson 2:

How do we construct a garment out of recycled material?

Project Objectives: Students will be able to:

  1. Recycle old or gently used clothing
  2. Technically apply recycled materials onto used clothing to develop creative and innovative garments.
  3. Further develop their machine and hand

Materials:

Sewing machine, thread, needle, glue, scissors, stapler, old or gently used clothing, dress form, straight pins, black, clear, & blue garbage bags, aluminum foil, empty potato chip bags, empty juice and milk cartons, empty soda cans, metro cards, plastic water bottles, magazines, empty plastic soda bottles, cereal boxes, leaves, newspapers, egg cartons, bubble wrap, duck tape, scrap fabric, CD's, candy wrappers.

Procedures:

  1. Students & teachers will observe the finished fashion illustrations and will discuss how to go about applying the recycled materials onto the garments.
  2. Students will place old or gently used clothing onto the dress form and the garments will be altered to better suit each finished design.
  3. Students will drape the recycled materials onto the garments.
  4. Students will use hand and machine sewing skills to permanently apply the recycled materials onto the garments.
  5. Students will use glue, stapler, and other efficient office supply products in order to permanently apply required materials onto the garments.

Homework:

Students will collect garbage from school and home grounds and place them into the appropriate recyclable dispenser. Students will also collect additional recycle materials they need to complete their garments.

Assessment:

Finished garments inspired by global environmental awareness will reflect what students learned.

Lesson 3:

How to use Nero to create a digital movie presentation of the fashion recycle garments.

Project Objectives: Students will be able to:

  1. Import still and video images into Nero
  2. Organize slide shows with titles
  3. Import music and synchronize it with the video presentation
  4. Develop a DVD copy of the finished video
  5. Convert the finished video to an MPEG format in order to view it on line.

Materials:

  • PC with internet access
  • Nero (Movie editing software)
  • PC with fire wire port
  • PC with DVD burner
  • Fire wire cable
  • Blank DVD
  • Digital still pictures and video of the fashion recycle fashion show

Procedures:

  1. Students will view the Nero 8 tutorial on line as an introduction to learning the Nero video editing software program http://nero.com/enu/show-tutorial.php?tut=MjM=
  2. Teacher will demonstrate step by step procedures. As the teacher demonstrates students will be executing the instructions in their individual computer stations.
  3. Connecting the digital video to the computer
  4. Opening the Nero program exporting the video into the program
  5. Adding video, still pictures, music, transition, and titles.
  6. Convert video into a finished DVD
  7. Convert finished video into a MPEG format to be featured on the website.

Assessment:

The finished video will serve as an informal assessment of the skills learned

Lesson 4

How to design a website with google sites.

Project Objectives: Students will be able to:

  1. Design a website with google sites
  2. Publish multimedia data onto the website
  3. Publish the website
  4. Understand the importance of using a web site to share, build and promote their professional endeavors
  5. Use an online web video as a learning tool

Materials:

  • PC with internet access
  • Preplan layout of website content
  • Digital still pictures and video that will be inserted onto the web pages

Procedures:

  1. Students will log onto the following website (http://vimeo.com/1734638) in order to view a tutorial video on how to create a website with google sites.
  2. Students will take notes of important information they need to create a google site website.
  3. Each student will create a google account
  4. Teacher will execute the step by step procedure to developing the web page
  5. Students will work on their specific web pages
  6. Select students will work in groups of two to develop the home page, credits and video page of the website.

Assessment:
