THE RENEWAL OF AMERICAN TEACHER UNIONISM
Abstract: The contemporary crisis of public education is rooted in structural changes in the American polity and economy, and public schools will have to be remade to address these changes if they are to survive in a meaningful way. Teacher unions will have to play a central role in that process, and in so doing, remake themselves. A vision for a renewed teacher unionism is elaborated here, focusing on four discourses of teaching - teaching as a profession, as a craft, as a vocation and as nurturing activity.
