Teachers Network Leadership Institute (TNLI)
Santa Barbara Fellows 2009-10

Kristin Anderson, Senior TNLI Metlife Fellow, is currently a teacher at Maple High School, an alternative high school in the Lompoc Unified School District. Kristin teaches a variety of subjects including, California requirements, leadership, parenting, social studies, and social science. Kristin is also the career teacher and Independent Study Coordinator at Maple High. In addition, she is now the site coordinator for all of the career training and scholarship opportunities for the graduating seniors She is the Teacher in Charge and serves as the chair for the Drug Advisory Committee.

Kristin has a single subject teaching credential in Social Science, CLAD, and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She has been a speaker at the California Continuation Education Association for her work with her Leadership class; Kristin started the successful leadership program that won the California Continuation Education Association Award for exemplary program in a continuation school. This award assisted Maple High School in the designation of being a “Model School.”

Kristin has spoken at the California State Convention. Kristin is a senior fellow for TNLI, and looks forward to continuing her research in the area of student motivation and the California State testing.

Kristen Burke, Senior TNLI Metlife Fellow, teaches a self-contained, third grade, Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) class. This year will be Kristen’s13th year as a teacher.

Kristen became an Early Childhood Generalist, National Board Certified Teacher in 2002. She holds a California State Reading Specialist’s Credential, and a Master’s in Education in Reading. Kristen has been awarded multiple Impact II recognitions for her excellence in teaching including Team Coaching Grants, Technology Grants, Care & Share, and Service Learning Projects.

Linda Edwards, Senior TNLI Metlife Fellow, teaches fourth grade at Cold Spring School in Santa Barbara, California. She has been a teacher for thirteen years now. Linda is a fellow of the South Coast Writing Project and the California History-Social Science Project. She administers the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program, and is the vice principal at Cold Spring School and works as the service-learning liaison as well.

Luke Laurie, Senior TNLI Metlife Fellow, is an eighth grade science teacher at El Camino Jr. High in Santa Maria, California. He teaches a Robotics Science Class, coordinates UCSB's RoboChallenge program, and is a MESA advisor. Mr. Laurie won the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence in 2005, and the Venoco Crystal Apple Award in 2000. Mr. Laurie was the 2009 Santa Barbara County’s Teacher of the Year.

Mr. Laurie has been awarded the Albert Einstein Distinguished Science Educator Fellowship to work on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. As an Einstein Fellow, he worked on education policy in Washington D.C. for the 2006-2007 School Year in the office of U.S. Congressman Mike Honda, who represents California’s 15th District.

Kristen Adair Lewis, Research Advisor – UCSB , has been teaching in Lompoc California and Shreveport Louisiana for eighteen years. She holds a California Multiple-Subjects Credential for grades Kindergarten through twelve, a Louisiana Multiple-Subjects Credential for grades kindergarten through eight, and a California Language Acquisition and Development Credential. Kristen teaches world and American history, biology, earth science, and ecology at Camino Real Community Partnership Academy, a charter school that Kristen co-founded for disenfranchised high school students in Lompoc. Kristen is a Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA) advisor for all Lompoc students and she founded a student research group called the Student Environmental Research Foundation. She will complete her Ph.D. with the University of California in Santa Barbara in Teaching and Learning with an emphasis in science in May of 2010.

Sonya Morris, TNLI MetLife Fellow, is currently an eighth grade math teacher at Arellanes Junior High School, which is in the Santa Maria-Bonita School District. In addition to her regular classroom duties, Mrs. Morris teaches an after school program for migrant children, tutors during her lunch time, is math department chair, and is an AVID-trained math teacher.She is active with her students in participating in various service projects to give back to the community.

In past years, she has served as a Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) mentor, worked on creating a benchmark test to support statewide testing and organized annual three – four day college trips for eighth graders. She served as union representative for four years and was part of the leadership committee for six years, MESA advisor for three years and has been a dedicated teacher of students in seventh and eighth grade.

In addition to being National Board Certified in adolescent math, Mrs. Morris holds a Multiple Subject Credential, a Single Subject Credential in math, Supplemental Authorization in math, and a Master of Arts Degree in bilingual/cross cultural education as well as a Bilingual, Crosscultural, Language And Academic Development (BCLAD) Certificate. Awards and honors have included:

  • Participated in a math forum (honored by Jack O’Connell) to discuss and add to the current math framework for California on April 23, 2009
  • National Board Certification for Adolescent Math, January 2005
  • Friend of Children Award (Locks of Love), December 2002
  • Angel in Education, September 2000

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCES

  • Currently an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma - an honor society for teachers
  • Teaches methodology classes for Chapman University and La Verne University
  • Participated in the Cal Poly Math project and other programs like this for the past 8 years to present
  • Attended AVID conference for math in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008 for a week at a time in the summer.
  • Organized Washington DC/New York trip for students and parents, spring 2006, 2008
  • Attended CMC in Monterey and in Palm Springs for the last 6 years.
  • Studied at language school in Cuernavaca, Mexico (January 1995)
  • Traveled to Peru, Costa Rica, and Guatemala to experience culture and languages of diverse people (Summer 1993).
  • Lived in Barcelona, Spain (August 1992 - January 1993).

Petti M. Pfau, the new Director of Teacher Programs at the Santa Barbara County (CA) Education Office, has just come aboard as one of Teachers Network’s newest affiliate director for TNLI in Santa Barbara California. Petti has a background of 37 years and has taught every grade level from kindergarten through college. During the last 12 years, Petti has also taught teacher technology classes through CTAP (California Technology Assistance Project) and BTSA (Beginning Teachers Support and Assessment).

Mary Post, Senior TNLI MetLife Fellow, is a Special Education Teacher at Foothill School in Goleta, California. She is the Resource and Special Day Class teacher, as well as the Learning Center Teacher. She teaches fourth – sixth grade students with mild learning disabilities.

Mary has been a teacher since 1990. She has two Master’s Degrees, one in Special Education and the other in Educational Leadership. She currently holds Administrative Level I certification. She is a member the Goleta Union School District Strategic Plan Committee.

Mary has been a TNLI fellow for the past four years. During this time, she has conducted action research projects focusing on teaching metacognitive strategies to underperforming math students and understanding the benefits of alternative education for students with learning disabilities. Additionally, she has written a case designed to encourage discussion about the implications of the “No Child Left Behind” testing policies for teachers and students.
