NYC Helpline: How To: What You Need to Know

How to Foster Parent Contact

Sample letter 3: How to Succeed in Your Class

Dear Parents,

I would like to explain a few of the class rules.

School begins at 8:20. Attendance and punctuality are very important. In order for your child to receive the full benefit of this school year your child must be in school, on time, every day. If your child is absent, please send a note explaining the absence. Patterns of absences and lateness will be questioned. Unfortunately, your child is the one who will miss the opportunities presented during those absences.

Uniforms are to be worn on a daily basis.

Your child should have a folder. The folder should be brought to school and back home each day. Please check your child's folder every night. Any notices will be kept in this folder. Please remove the notices from your child's folder so that I know you have seen them.

The children will be receiving a math workbook. Your child's name and a number will be written on the front of the workbook. Please cover the book and rewrite your child's name and number on the cover.

Homework is assigned daily. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the children will receive a homework page in their notebooks. Each of these pages is designed so that the children can do it by themselves. The purpose is to teach responsibility and independence. However, I suggest that you check to make sure the homework is completed correctly. Please sign the homework.

Every night the children have a math page (in their math workbook) to complete. This always involves coloring. We discuss the page in school and the children follow the directions written at the top of the page. They are required only to color portions at home. Please do not let your child use this book as a coloring book. If your child is absent please help your child do the next homework page.

Your child will be allowed to borrow one book each day. I keep list of all borrowed books. Every child has a plastic bag with his or her name on it. The book will be placed in the plastic bag when your child borrows it. I ask that it be returned in the bag. When your child returns the book, I note that the book was returned (in good condition). Your child will then be allowed to borrow another book.

The class eats lunch at 10:10. Since we have an early lunch I allow snack to be eaten in the afternoon. I suggest that fruit, crackers, juice or water be sent as a snack. A sandwich is not a snack. I do not have an official "snack time." The children eat snack when they are hungry. Snacks are not allowed during the last period of the day (2:05 - 2:50). Please understand that many times the children are so busy playing or working that they do not eat their snack.

Dismissal will usually be held in the schoolyard. Please wait until the entire class is lined up in its assigned spot. Once the class is assembled I will give a signal for the parents to take the children. I must be able to see all the children and who is picking them up. Please DO NOT REMOVE your child from the line prior to this signal. This is dangerous, as it teaches the children that it is acceptable to leave without my permission.

During inclement weather, dismissal will be from the auditorium. Please enter from the back of the auditorium, pick up your child, and exit through the door at the front of the auditorium.

If your child will be celebrating a birthday in school please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Parties may only occur with my permission and with advance notice.

  • Parties do not begin before 2:00.

  • Only cupcakes and juice are permitted.

  • Party bags may be given out.

  • Balloons are not permitted.

If your child is having a problem of any sort, in school, please make an appointment to see me in order to discuss the matter. The times I am available for meetings are:

Monday 1:45 - 2:30
Tuesday 8:35 - 9:20
Wednesday 11:10 - 11:55
Thursday 8:35 - 9:20
Friday 11:10 - 11:55

Thank you,

Ms. _________
