Anatomy of a Gown...

 Colonial Clothing

Lesson Two

Background Information

The clothing that people wore in the past has the ability to fascinate and involve our curiosity.  During colonial times people responded to fashion and varied their garments according to the activity and the formality of the occasion.

Common colors included red, earthy greens, browns, blues, violets, and grays.  Contrary to popular myths, black and white clothing was clearly not the most common colors worn.  Children both boys and girls wore dresses ("gowns"), generally made of either wool or linen until about the age of seven to nine; when boys began to wear clothing similar to their fathers, and girls began to wear dresses cut more like those of their mothers.
