Lesson 4- Post Assessment and Test Item analysis

___ Instructional objectives
Selected questions from pre-test are done by all students in order to analyze areas of mastery and goals for improvement.

___ Time required- 2 periods of 50 minutes
Advance preparation and prerequisite knowledge/skills –
Teacher selects items from pretest that best match the instruction given (unless objective is chosen to test to demonstrate gaps in instructional focus…. In which case items from the standards could be chosen which were NOT taught)
Data table prepared to insert number correct for each test item.
Ideally, a data projector is used to quickly organize and display test item summaries after scoring. Chalkboard or transparency projector works fine also.

___ Materials/resources required -
- All student tests scored, student scoring of each other facilitates the activity.

___ Vocabulary-
- item analysis
- average
-spreadsheet

___ Procedures & Activities –
1. test is given, papers exchanged, and answers announced for scoring
2. data table on computer/projector, or on board/overhead is filled in for number correct for each item. (team groups can organize their composite results and enter, or teacher can call for hand count from the “graders”.
3. Graph the items (ideally, grouped by topic area, such as “volcanoes”)
4. Agree on where the class is strong in demonstrated understanding, and where work is needed.
5. Individually, students write a short summary of there personal strength of understanding (most likely in their team topic area!) and 1-2 areas that they need to work and improve on.

___ Extensions & Homework-
6. Depending on time and objectives, the unit can continue with very directed review of class needs, and independent study of individual needs, with final assessment given within a few days.

___ Evaluation – Final assessment and item analysis
