Lesson 3- Students Design and Deliver

___ Instructional objectives
Teams fill in team lesson design sheets as they determine which learning resources they have found would best work for the whole class.
-Teacher schedules time with each group to work through their ideas, materials, and understanding of concepts. Each team member keeps their own log of all group information.
Teams deliver instruction as they are ready, with teacher doing “preview/review” to assist.

___ Time required- 5-7 periods of 50 minutes
Advance preparation and prerequisite knowledge/skills –
It is very probable that the teacher will need to choose one or more topics, and using the resources found by students, briefly share and develop an idea for using it.

___ Materials/resources required –
- Select 1-2 samples of student team progress to develop as a model for whole class.

___ Vocabulary-See team focus area sheet for ideas (link)

___ Procedures-
1. Teacher models how to use the resources-
“Jorge and Jesus are thinking of using an animation of how two different types of volcanoes work, so they will probably use the projector to show you all how to get to the website, view the animations, and then “show what you know”. They’re not sure whether you’ll be doing some drawing, writing, or both. Remember how we sometimes draw and label with arrows when we want to show Processes?”
“Cristal’s group found information and a lesson about …… crystals… so they’re working up a hands-on activity where you’ll use some kind of magnifiers to see better what crystals are. They’re still working on what tools and materials they’ll need, and figuring out how to make the activity not too long to run out of time, and not too short so you don’t learn enough. Then they have some Rocks & Minerals websites that let you see samples of crystals in the rocks we know and love”

___ Activities –
Students focus almost exclusively on taking the resources they’ve already acquired, and developing their lesson designs. With teacher Okay, one or more team members may be engaged in further research.
Teacher works very closely with groups based on readiness or need. ( I ended up using a schedule, so that each team knew when they could get 10-15 minutes of nearly uninterrupted time with the teacher.) This is a great time to really discuss and think through how they have “learned”, and whether that method (web reading etc.) would work as well with whole class, or whether they need to somehow condense the learning. Also, how do we help students “show what they know”.

___ Extensions
___ Homework- Each team member completes their own lesson design sheet.

___ Evaluation – All students show Lesson Design sheets for progress check.
