Compound Words

Objective: Students will read text and determine the main idea and identify relevant supporting details and facts.

Vocabulary: pitch, near, bound, shelves, fog

Working with words: The teacher will introduce compound words by writing samples on the board, then monitor as students make a list of compound words they find in chapter 2.

Activity: The teacher will...

1. begin lesson by having the students share their predictions of chapter 2

 2. introduce new vocabulary words and definitions for chapter 2

3. give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into 6 pieces- students can also insert a table with 6 columns or rows into word processing and then type words and definitions and add clip art or drawings or

4. have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box

5. read and discuss chapter 2

6. students will name all the animals mentioned in this chapter

7. students will draw one of the animals and label animal parts

Students will go online and complete activities for chapter 2.

Evaluation: Students will make a prediction activity sheet. Students will predict what might happen and answer the following questions:

*What do you learn about Sarah’s personality by reading her letters?

*What do Caleb and Anna worry about when they think about Sarah’s arrival?

*Why is Caleb hoping that Anna will sing?
