Writing a Letter

Objective: Students will use simple strategies to determine meaning and increase vocabulary for reading including the use of multiple meaning.

Vocabulary: homely, dusk, wretched, feisty, energetic

Working with words: Introduction to vocabulary along with activity.

Activity: The teacher will...

1. begin lesson by activating prior knowledge

2. introduce vocabulary words and definitions

3. give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into 5 pieces (model)- students can also use word processing to insert a table- they can create a table with 5 columns/one row or five rows/one column- they can then type words, definitions and add a drawing or clip art or

4. have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box

5. have students write prediction of the story based on title and the front cover

6. read and discuss chapter 1

7. students will write a letter to Sarah and come up with three questions they would like to ask her

1.  Students will go online and complete activities for chapter 1.

2.  Students can play an interactive game on vocabulary.

Evaluation: The students will reflect on chapter 1 using the questions below and complete a worksheet on recalling details:

*Why does Caleb repeatedly ask Anna to tell him the story about when he was born?

*Why does he want Anna to remember the words to mamma’s song?

Home Learning: Complete Vocabulary Worksheet and write a prediction for chapter 2.
