Lesson Six

Quotation Marks

Objective: Students will use simple strategies to determine meaning and increase vocabulary for reading including the use of multiple meaning.

Vocabulary: mineral, crumble, glass, ocean, protection

Working with words: The teacher will introduce quotation marks by writing samples on the board, then monitor as students make a list of quotations they find in chapter 6

Activity: The teacher will...

1. begin lesson by having the students share their predictions of chapter 6

2. introduce new vocabulary words and definitions for chapter 6

3. give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into six pieces- students can also insert a table with rows and columns into word processing, then type text and add clip art and/or drawings or

4. have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box

5. read and discuss chapter 6

6. students will draw the cow pond scene from the book with the main characters included and label

7. students will write a paragraph about why Sarah compares/contrasts the sea to the pond

Evaluation: Students will answer the following questions:

*What evidence shows that Sarah is a fun loving person?

*What do you think Anna was dreaming about when she said " I slept, dreaming a perfect dream?"

*What farming skill did Sarah learn?

*How far do they live from the school?

*Why do you think some barns in Maine are attached to the houses?
