Lesson Five

Punctuation

Objective: Students will identify the similarities and differences among the characters.

Vocabulary: lantern, mica, dune, collapse

Working with words: The teacher will introduce how to use punctuation marks by writing samples on the board, then monitor as students make a list of punctuation they find in chapter 5.

Activity: The teacher will...

1. begin lesson by having the students share their predictions of chapter 5

2. introduce new vocabulary words and definitions for chapter 5

3. give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into 6 pieces- students also insert a table with columns and rows into word processing, then type text and add clip art and/or drawings or

4. have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box

5. read and discuss chapter 5

6. students will draw the first words of Caleb, Sarah, Anna - label each illustration

7. students will list ways Sarah showed affection for the sheep.

Websites 

Students will go online and complete activities for chapter 5.

Evaluation: Students will complete a Character Mobile. Students will cut out parts and descriptions of the Main Characters in Sarah Plain and tall and answer the following questions:

*How do you know that Sarah is fond of the sheep?

*What does Caleb tell Sarah about winters on the prairie?

*What is the purpose of a lantern?

*Sarah wrote letters to her brother, pretend you are her brother and write a short note to Sarah.

Home Learning: Complete Writing Activity and write a prediction for chapter 6.
