Volatile Volcanoes is a science/mathematics project specifically
designed to teach students about volcanoes through the use of the
Internet. It is based on an interactive unit that will build students'
research skills. A series of lessons guide the students in their search
for information. Each lesson has specific links that make it easy for
beginners to navigate without difficulty, as well as allowing high tech
students to create a unique presentation using their wildest
imaginations. The lessons consists of easy to read, comprehensive, and
step by step directions. For example, students have to compare and
contrast two volcanoes. A link to Volcano Adventure takes the
students to the site where they will choose which volcanoes to
compare. After all the lessons are completed, students then gather
and compile their information to begin creating their presentations.
Objectives:
Use online and off-line resources to locate information
Use appropriate application from an integrated software
package to prepare a research document including text,
illustrations and statistical information.
Standards:
Language Arts
Reading
The student uses
the reading process effectively.
The student constructs meaning
from a wide range of texts.
Writing
The student uses the writing
process appropriately.
The student writes to
communicate ideas and information effectively.
Science
The Nature of Science
The student
understands that most natural events occur in comprehensible,
consistent patterns.
Mathematics
Number Sense, Concepts, and Operations
The student understands the effects of operations on
numbers and the relationships among these operations, selects
appropriate operations, and computes for problem solving.
Procedure:
Teach a unit on volcanoes to ensure that students have
prior knowledge on the subject.
Schedule students at the computer for research.
Access the Internet using a web browser and demonstrate the
use of search engines as research tools.
Assign students in groups of five for their natural
phenomenon cooperative study after which they will present to the
class.
Direct the students to use online and off-line resources to
gather information about volcanoes. The study should include
causes, natural and economic effects, terminology, major events,
and images.
