Muggie Maggie - Lesson 9

Objective: Students will be able to:

      Identify vocabulary.

      Identify story elements (Title, Author, Setting, Characters, Problem, Events one, two and three and Solution) by using a story map.

      Identify the cause (Why did it happen?) to the effect (What happened?).

       Read and organize information for a variety of purposes, including making a report.

Materials:

      Story Map

      Worksheet (cause and effect)

      Worksheet (cloze activity)

Activity: The teacher will...

1. Begin lesson by reviewing vocabulary words and definitions.

2. Review the events of the story and have a discussion with the class.

3. Review what cause and effect is and discuss.

4. Have the students create a story map: (30 minutes)

       Title:

       Author:

       Setting:

       Characters:

       Problem:

       Events one, two, and three:

       Solution: 

5. Have the students complete a worksheet on cause and effect (print out the worksheet). (20 minutes)

6. Pair up the students to complete a cloze activity using their book. (30 minutes)

7. Allow students to share their responses with another pair.

8. If time permits allow two- three pairs to share their responses.

9. Have the students go online to Puzzle Maker and create crossword puzzles and word searches using selected vocabulary words from the entire unit.

10. The teacher can preview Education World to get ideas on how to give students ideas on publishing book reports. Teacher can also read Better Than Book Reports by Christine Moen for book report ideas.

Evaluation: Students will do a story map, worksheet on cause and effect, and do a cloze activity.

Home Learning:

      Students will complete a MUGGIE MAGGIE acronym poem on the computer.

      Students will log onto Education World and click on Better Book Reports 25 Ideas! and choose an idea to write their book report.
