Controlling the Layout of Text and Images with Tables

  1. The easiest and surest way to control the layout of images and text on your page is by creating a table.  For example, you can create a 2-column X 2-row (4 cell) table by clicking on the table button on the tool bar.  Click and drag across the number of columns and rows you want to create.

Let go of the mouse button and a table will be created such as the one below.

2. Alter the look, layout, and alignment of a cell by right-clicking on the cell and selecting Cell Properties from the pop-up menu.  Let's make the background color of one cell red:

3. Alter the look or layout of a table by right-clicking anywhere in the table and selecting Table Properties from the pop-up menu. Let's get rid of the table border by changing borders - size - to "0"

4. Rows or columns can be added to a table by clicking in the table where you want to make the addition, then clicking table -insert rows or columns. I'm going to add one column to the right of my selection:

I manually clicked and dragged the cell borders to format their size, though you can also do it accurately using the table properties "specify width" options.

5.  Cells can be merged by clicking and dragging across the cells to be merged, right-clicking on the selected cells, and clicking on "merge cells" from the pop-up menu. I'm going to merge the top three cells together. Perhaps I'd prefer text going across the top, with three images below

It's easiest if you give each image its own cell in a table, and place text in different cells.   Play around with different layouts.

Time to add images.  Getting back to our Thanksgiving theme, here are some free clip-art sites from which to gather your images.  From now on, whenever you surf the web and see an image you like, grab it and download to an images file for later use.

1.  Go to these sites to find images:

http://kidsdomain.com/clip/index.html Kids Domain's clip art collection

http://countryclipart.com/welcome.htm Original country clipart by Lisa

2.  To save image, right click - save picture as - save to your folder.

3.  To insert the image, position cursor where you want it (I'm putting it in this cell in my table), then select insert - picture - from file.  Or you can use this icon on the toolbar   .  Select the picture from your folder, click insert, and it appears.

Celebrate Thanksgiving!

I resized this image by clicking once on it, "grabbing" one of the black boxes at an outer corner, and sliding in while holding the mouse down.  If you want or need to hyperlink your image back to its originating site (sometimes requested by the designer), then click once on the image and select the hyperlink icon , then type the full address (http://xxx) and click ok.

WHEW!  Now let's see how my page is shaping up. Click here.
