ORCHID INDUSTRY RESEARCH

OBJECTIVE: Students conduct research in the library and on the Internet to gather and organize information on the orchid care, orchid propagation and orchid sales. Students will be able to navigate between sites to collect information and analyze and evaluate electronically retrieved information.

TIME REQUIRED: One or two 60 minute class periods

BACKGROUND: Students should be familiar with the school computers and able to navigate to the Internet so that they can find information.

ADVANCED PREPARATION: Check to make sure that the web site http://kn.pacbell.com/wired/fil/pages/listorchidlil.html is working. This site is a Filamentality page that I created with a list of orchid links on it. If it is not, I provided the web sites separately on the resource page.

ANTICIPATORY SET: Teacher reviews copy write issues on the Internet. Although pictures and information should be encouraged to be downloaded, students should be reminded that they must not copy unless given permission.

ACTIVITY: Students will conduct research on the Internet to prepare their group for their role in orchid care, orchid propagation or orchid sales. They will collect their information on a Microsoft Word document in their own words and print so that they can use it for their written report and oral presentation.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Students open a Microsoft Word document and minimize it.

  2. Students search the web using the orchid web site and record information in Word document.

  3. If time, students may use various search engines to find their own web sites. Those sites will be written on the board so that students can share valuable sites.

CLOSURE: Students print out their information and get into their groups to share their information and discuss areas that may need more research.

EXTENSION: Students create a brochure on their own or using Publisher to describe what an orchid is and add any information pertinent to their role.

HOMEWORK: Students complete their written report that describes their experience. This report includes what an orchid is and describes their findings on their role as orchid care, orchid propagation or orchid sales.

SKILLS: ANALYZING, INFERRING, ORGANIZING, COMMUNICATING

EVALUATION: Students really need to be monitored when using the Internet for research. Make sure that they put all information into their own words. I only required one to two pages for their written report since this assignment was completed for an elective class.
