Lessons 10 and 11 Completion of Science Board Data using Microsoft Word and Excel Tutorials

and

Oral Presentation Preparation

Two 1 hour sessions

Instructional Objectives

Students will complete the rest of the information for their boards using the Microsoft Word Tutorials and Excel tutorials, depending on individual need. Students will also prepare for oral presentation of their projects by reviewing several web sites on oral presentations.

Advanced Preparation/Prerequisite Knowledge

Students will be at different stages of both understanding of the tutorials and completion of their projects. It is important to be flexible at this point. Some students may also already be done with the board so that is why I have combined two skills for these lessons. By the end of the second lesson everyone should be just working on preparing their oral presentations.

There is a fair amount of reading with this lesson as well, so again, I have allowed my better readers to help those who struggle. I want all students to understand the concept of using the Internet for reference, so rather than just have the better readers show the struggling ones what to do, I have them all access the Internet and read the tutorials. You of course can adjust this to meet your needs.

The teacher should be familiar with the following web sites: http://school-for-champions.com/speaking/using_notes.htm, and http://aresearchguide.com/3tips.html, http://toastmasters.org/tips.asp.

Materials

Computers with Internet access.

At least one color printer.

Science Boards.

Glue sticks, paste, or Elmer's School Glue.

Assignment sheet

Index cards

Procedures

1. Each child will need his or her own computer to use. If you have only a few computers in your room you will have to allow only a certain amount of time per student. A lab is another good alterative.

2. Have the children open Internet Explorer or Netscape.

3. If they are working on completing the graphics and text for their boards have them follow the following steps:

4. Have them type into the address bar http://baycongroup.com/wlesson1.htm

5. Have students minimize this site by clicking on the small line at the right hand side of the page on the screen.

6. Have students open Microsoft Word.

7. Go to the Start Menu.

8. Go to Programs.

9. Go to Microsoft Word.

10. A new blank page should open. If it does not, have the students go to File, new, blank document.

11. Minimize this screen in the same way they minimized the web page.

12. Follow the tutorial for creating a word document. Have them type what is left to complete on their board. For most of them this will be the Results, conclusions and anything additional they have chosen to add.

13. Print this out and glue it down.

14. Next have students switch to the Excel tutorial

15. Have the children type in the first web site: http://baycongroup.com/el0.htm

16. Have them  minimize the site and go open up Microsoft Excel.

17. Go to the start menu, programs, Microsoft Excel

18. Have them minimize this.

19. Go back to the tutorial by clicking on the icon of the page at the bottom of the screen.

20. Click on lesson one and have them follow each lesson to the bottom of the page.

21. When they have completed the tutorial through the end of the page have them switch to the other site.

22. Type in the address http://bcschools.net/staff/ExcelHelp.htm#StartingExcel

23. Open "Inserting A Chart" and follow the instructions on that page for creating a chart. Have students bounce between Excel and the tutorial to practice.

24. Once students are comfortable have them, create charts, graphs, or tables using their data.

25. Print of save to disk to print from another printer or at a later time.

26. Glue down printed documents on the appropriate location on the science board.

27. For those students working on practicing their presentations, have them go to http://school-for-champions.com/speaking/using_notes.htm.

28. Have them read the info. They may print this out to refer too as well since it is only one page.

29. Go to file, print, and click on ok when your printer is highlighted. If you do not have a printer (I only have a couple that are attached to the computers) have the students take notes.

30. Have them make index cards at this point as the rest of the sites are on actually giving the presentation. I want my students to use this format rather than relying on their report on the board. They will need to refer to their board but I want them to be facing me and the Fair judges when they give their presentations, as opposed to talking to the science board because they are trying to read their information from it.

31. Next have them go to  http://aresearchguide.com/3tips.html. This site is a little longer so they will take more time reading this and it is important that they take notes.

32. Have them then go to http://toastmasters.org/tips.asp. Have them print out these tips to have in their binders for future oral presentations.

33. Finally they should be practicing with one another using their boards. This is a noisy activity but it will give them a world of self confidence to be able to practice in front of an audience.

Assessment

The assessment is in how successful they are at both completing the required documentation and in presenting it. You will be using the Fifth grade rubric  and the Fourth Grade Rubric to evaluate both the project and their oral presentations.

Extensions

You can assign the completion of the project as homework. In addition I recommend that even though they have practiced in class that they practice at home as well since they will be presenting their projects to me and to the Science Fair judges and all the parents, family and friends that will be attending the fair.
