Lesson 4

Putting It All Together/Demonstrating a Drug-Free Me!

Instructional Objectives

In this lesson, students will develop an understanding, and practice a model for avoiding situations involving potential negative peer pressure to use drugs.

Procedures

Connecting to Prior Knowledge/Experience/Learning

Teacher and students discuss situations for which students say, "If I had known that, I would have made a different choice". Students come to understand there is a way in which they can get information before they agree to participate in an activity which might lead to trouble. Teacher sets up computer(s) to Drug Free America website (listed in resources) and highlights the "Features" section. Teacher can read, have students read in cooperative groups, or read as individuals from the real-life stories listed. (If computers are not available, teacher may photocopy stories to be read in groups or by individuals.)

Activities/Homework

Students are in cooperative groups of 3-5 students. They are given the ASK model and a list of situation starters. (Teacher may wish to make an overhead of the ASK model to demonstrate how it is applied)

In their groups, students identify which situation starter they will use. Students then identify which student(s) will be the one(s) to provide negative peer pressure and which student(s) will say no and provide positive options.

After students are identified they will create a short play demonstrating the use of the Three-Step ASK process.

Students will work in designated class and outside class time on their presentation

Teacher may wish to allocate one or two class periods for ASK presentations or allow ten to fifteen minutes at the end of several class periods for presentation. Students should be given time to practice in class prior to presenting to the entire class.

Students present their ASK presentations, insuring they have used all three steps in the process.

Time Required

Two to three fifty-minute lessons.
