A LETTER:

June 5, 2003

Dear Mr. Pantelidis,[Principal]

I would like to know if, for our safety project with Ms.Williams, could some students from Class 5-205 and I set up a meeting or a workshop in the school to discuss safety? We would hand out fliers stating the time it starts and include a little introduction on pedestrian safety. Another idea, is to produce a concert on safety in the park. We could sing songs and make speeches about safety. Which idea do you like the best? Which one can we do ?

Sincerely, A.R.
Class 5-205

And. . . Photos of the actual workshops:

NOTE: Above is a sample of a student run classroom workshops on safety. Students presented a short presentation followed by worksheets. This was done during the last week of school and the presentation held the students' interest!

A SAFETY SONG AND POEM

Safety Song
Lyrics by Jessica
Tune by Kristina
Verse
All children, all over the world, deserve to live their lives. So be careful when you’re crossing the streets and look left and right. If you’re under 10, this applies to you. Be careful or else you’ll get black and blue.

Chorus
Look left and right, can’t you see a car is coming?
Beep, beep, beep.
So this is the way to stay safe and listen to your parents and don’t come home late.

Verse
When you see the crossing guard, you better listen up. They know the way, they know their crossing stuff. And, only cross when they say or else you won’t be OK!

Chorus
Look left and right, can’t you see a car is coming?
Beep, beep, beep.
So this is the way to stay safe and listen to your parents and don’t come home late.

Verse
Now you know the way to stay safe. So, if you follow these rules you’ll be ok. Listen to your parents all the time and you’ll be just fine.
Chorus
Look left and right, can’t you see a car is coming?
Beep, beep, beep.
So this is the way to stay safe and listen to your parents and don’t come home late.

BE SAFE!
BE SAFE!
BE SAFE!
BE SAFE!
BE SAFE!!!!

Poem for Safety

When I see the hospital
Every time I think I might cry.
I think about all the children who have died
Because they all died from the streets and by the streets-
I mean by crossing.
So now, I am more careful than ever.

Pedestrian Safety Play

Script: Pedestrian Safety Play

Opening Part: Students come out of school and wait at the corner to cross the street.

Part 1: Michael starts dancing on the corner and gets hit by a car.
Arianna : ”Is he all right?”
Alexis: ”Someone call 911!”
Leyann: (calls 911)
Leyann: ”Hello. Please send an ambulance, quickly.”
Police: ”Where are you calling from?”
Leyann: ”We are on 103 St in Madison.”
Police: ”We are on our way.”
Leyann: ”Thank You.”

Part 2: Ambulance comes
Ricky: ”How did he get hit?”
Alexis: ”He was on the corner dancing and all of a sudden the drunk driver ran the light, and while he was crossing the street to go catch the bus a car came out of no where and hit him!”
Police: ”You’re coming with me.”
Johnsel: (arrested)
Police and ambulance cars disappear.
Part 3:
Rumors spread about the accident. Michael returns and Johnsel is in driving school.
Alexis: This is how important pedestrian safety is to us.
Part 4:
This would have never happened if he would have paid attention to the crossing guard and was not listening to his music.
1.Look both ways before you cross
2.Pay attention to the crossing guard
3. Stop at the curb
4.Be alert at all times
5.Wear light and bright clothes

Dear Mayor Bloomberg;

I am a fifth grade student at P.S. 171 in Manhattan. We are currently doing a project on our area’s pedestrian safety. In the five mile radius around our school, we found many more wrongs than rights; such as cracks in the sidewalk, broken traffic signals, and quick-turning traffic signals. If possible, we would like these problems fixed. Many people are at risk of being injured, or even killed. PLEASE HELP US! If possible, can you send information on what your administration is doing to prevent this worldwide problem?

Dear Officer Verdejo,

The students in my class and I want to know if you have any information on pedestrian safety. We know that many accidents happen because of cracked sidewalks and cars which don’t obey street lights.

We also want to know if you have information about car accidents because that is another cause of pedestrian accidents. We learned that car accidents are one of the most serious causes of pedestrian accidents. We want to make our school community safer. Can you help us?

Sincerely,
Christopher S.

Dear Mayor Bloomberg;

My classmates and I would like to share with you that we are working on a project in our computer class. In our project we are trying to make streets safer for children, adults and the elderly.
Many traffic accidents happen every year; many resulting in deaths . My classmates and I would like you to help make it safer for children by fixing up the streets and the sidewalks and the street lights. Your help will make it safer for children, adults , and the elderly.
