Selecting "Virtual" Classroom Pet (Part One)

Objectives:

1. Students will identify and use voting as a way to make decisions.
2. Students will discuss data using appropriate terms more than/less than.
3. Students will construct a bar graph displaying real world data.

Introduction:
Begin a general discussion during circle time on pets. Elicit responses by posing the following type questions - What is a pet? Who has a pet at home? What do you need to do to take care of your pet?

Key Words:
pets, voting, survey, responsibility, bar graph, virtual, veterinarian

Procedure:
Students brainstormed four possible choices for a classroom "virtual" pet. (One student suggested an iguana or a snake. In the interest of the classroom they were rejected due to the squeamishness of several classmates as well as the teacher.) The final choices to be voted on were fish, rabbit, cat and dog. From the final four choices a vote was taken and a rabbit was selected as our "virtual" pet.
